How Are The Fuel Tax Dollars Spent?

Fiscal Years 2020-2022:

In 2010, Cornelius voters approved City Measure 34-201 and implemented a 2 cent per gallon fuel tax.  All monies collected were to be spent on capital pavement repairs on city streets.  Each year since implementation and based on condition, roads were selected to be improved.

The City of Cornelius is using full depth reclamation to restore and slurry sealing to prevent further pavement deterioration this summer.

Full Depth Reclamation

Full depth reclamation (FDR) is the process of pulverizing and blending of the roadway rock base and existing soils with cement to provide a solid foundation for the asphalt pavement. FDR treats all types of failures to the highest severity including ruts, rough areas, potholes, and cracking. Below is a list of the streets in the City of Cornelius receiving pavement restoration treatments this summer.

South Ivy Street – South 10th Avenue to the east
South Beech Street – South 19th Avenue to South 20th Avenue
South Emerald Loop – South 18th Avenue then 500’ west.
South 18th Avenue – South Dogwood Street to South Emerald Loop

Slurry and Crack Seal

Slurry seal consists of a mixture of water, asphalt emulsion, aggregate (small crushed rock), and additives that when applied to existing asphalt pavement restores the lost aggregate and asphalt emulsion.

Roads selected for slurry seals generally have low to moderate distress and narrow crack widths. Slurry seal applications seal the cracks, restore flexibility to the pavement surface, provide a deep rich black pavement surface color, and help preserve the underlying pavement.  The map below shows the streets receiving crack and slurry seal treatment this summer.
